The paper presents a view of the nature of the institution of prosecution and its place in the political system of modern Russia. Based on the analysis of the history of the Russian Prosecutor's office, the politically significant functions of the institution of prosecution have been proposed. It is noted that the Prosecutor's office in Russia has its own history and in modern context is a power institution incorporated into the political system. Thus, the authors aim to analyze politically the institutionalization of the Russian Prosecutor's office as a public authority having special status. According to the authors, the study of the role of the institution of prosecution in the political system of modern Russia involves three analytical approaches. Firstly, revealing the features of the Prosecutor's office development as an institution of power and its place in the political system. Secondly, determining political status and the role of the Prosecutor's office in modern political processes. And finally, determining capabilities and limitations of the Prosecutor's office in regulating political processes and public relations related to its place in all levels of power: prosecutor's supervision in state and municipal administration, compliance with the law, protection of human and civil rights and freedoms, fight against corruption, combating extremism and terrorism, protection of national security of Russia, etc.
