Pragmatism and Conspiracy Theories: the Russian Far East Officials’ Idea of Chinese Investors

Abstract
The aim of the article is to study how opinion of the officials of the Russian Far East about Chinese investments is influenced by state ideology. The empirical base of the research includes the results of public-opinion surveys in Russia and semi-structured interviews with the officials of the southern regions of the Far East. The author concludes that pragmatic attitude toward Chinese investor is dominant. The officials do not expect massive inflow of Chinese investment. Another approach to view a Chinese investor is a reduced one, when Chinese businessmen are identified with the Chinese state and treated as strategic thinkers.
