Siberia in the Early 1930s as Viewed by Ante Ciliga, the Croatian Communist

Abstract

The article is devoted to the analysis of memorial monograph titled «Russia: in the Country of the Great Lie» by Ante Ciliga, the Croatian Communist. The author lived in the Soviet Union from 1926 till 1935. He was arrested for taking part in the Trotskyist group in 1935. He managed to leave USSR legally in 1935. Ciliga assessed the social system in the USSR as state capitalism, where the bureaucracy is a new exploiting class. He described the distressful situation of the working class and the peasantry, the manners of the bureaucracy, corruption in the Soviet Union under Stalin rules. This article analyzes the experience of the first period of his exile in Siberia.
