Impact of “New Religious Consciousness” Ideas on the Collapse of the Russian Empire

Abstract
In the days of the USSR and later, up to the present time, the collapse of the Russian Empire was usually associated with the spread of Marxist ideas in Russia. In the beginning of the 20th century though there were also popular ideas of «new religious consciousness». The purpose of this investigation is to study the impact of those ideas on the collapse of the Russian Empire. Marxist ideas were widespread among workers and raznochintsy in Russia. Among the liberal intelligentsia other ideas were more popular – the ideas of «new religious consciousness», which were primarily aimed at modernizing the ROC. Gradually, the ideas of «new religious consciousness» became increasingly politicized. The most politicized of the ideas were those of the unacceptability of the relationship between the Church and the state, the religious nature of revolutions and the «religious community». These ideas eventually turned into promotion of the ideas of inevitability of revolution and the need to overthrow the autocracy and justification of terror and violence. The discussion of these ideas encouraged spread of revolutionary sentiments among the liberal intelligentsia and laid foundation for the February and October revolutions in 1917.
