Russian Missionary in America: Hieromonk Antonii (Dashkevich)

Abstract
The article is devoted to little known missionary activity of hieromonk Antonii (Dashkevich) who served in the Aleutian and Alaskan diocese in 1898-1905. It also contains a brief account of his turbulent subsequent years. The article is based on records of Russian State Historical Archive, Archive of Foreign Policy of the Russian Empire and especially Alaskan Russian Church Archive (Library of Congress, USA). Many of these documents are introduced into scholarly discourse for the first time. Special attention is paid to Father Antonii’s efforts to improve school education in Alaska and to his interaction with local American authorities. Portrait of a talented missionary sheds light on the whole Russian Orthodox mission in the USA. It is also demonstrated that in this missionary activity a lot depended on personal traits of clergy – their dedication and ability for spiritual guidance.
