The Non-Governmental Organisations in the British Policy of Immigrant Integration

Author(s)
E. A. Gorbunova
Abstract
The topic of immigrant integration remains highly relevant in the context of current political processes. Integration policies nowadays seem to be a prerequisite for solving social problems related to migration. In addition to state integration programmes, the role of civil society and nonprofit organisations in creating conditions for the successful integration of migrants in the host society is increasingly being emphasised in the academic community. The article examines the role of non-profit organisations in the formulation and implementation of immigration policy and, in particular, measures for the integration of immigrants, using Great Britain as a case study. Although Britain has never adopted a policy of migrant integration at the legislative level, there are a number of cross-departmental strategies at the executive level and a system of Strategic Migration Partnerships, which ensures communication and cooperation between national and local authorities and civil society actors. The article emphasizes that the context of the immigration situation encourages cooperation between NGOs in the field of migration and the local level of government, even if such cooperation runs counter to restrictive national policies. In addition, it notes the discrepancy between political discourse and practice in the field of integration policy.
