Abstract

Today in Russia there is a large number of organizations, associations, groups that can be classified as neo-pagan. Neo-pagan institutions claim to renew pagan culture and faith of the ancient Slavs. Although remnants of the pre-Christian beliefs and rituals are preserved mainly in the most remote parts of the Russian area, urban intellectuals are primarily involved in recreating the “Slavic religion” cut off from its rural roots. Is it still possible to revive the ancient paganism, that existed before the Baptism of Rus, today? The purpose of this study is to reconstruct the “Slavic Olympus” based on extant sources. The author has analyzed the opinion of scientists and ideologists studying modern paganism regarding the Slavic Pantheon. The article indicates the most significant difficulties in recreating the "Slavic religion". The author has come to a conclusion that the information about pre-Christian Slavic spirituality is sparse and fragmentary. It is appropriate to speak about partial Slavic belonging of local pagan gods in the domestic Pantheon.
