Nerchinsky Assumption Monastery in the Penitentiary System of the Russian Empire

Author(s)
E. S. Bushueva
Abstract

The paper gives evidence for the fact that the Nerchinsky Assumption monastery was one element in the chain of penitentiary monasteries in the Russian empire. It was widely known in higher government circles of secular and spiritual power. The laity who violated moral standards of gospel ethics represents a special group among those who were sent in exile to Assumption monastery “to deny himself and repent”. They were kept in monastery to repent of having committed sinful or criminal offenses.
