The History of Tatar European Islam: Islam and Liberalism

Author(s)
Z. F. Kharipova
Abstract

The purpose of this article is to examine the extent to which Islam, especially in its traditional forms, is compatible with liberalism and its values. For Russian religious studies, the issue of how secular Islam is able to get along with the democratic system of the West is of great importance. The article analyzes the historical background of modern Tatar Islam, as well as how the traditionalist and modernist positions of modern Tatars manifest themselves in relation to national and religious issues. Reformation historically has influenced the preservation and development of the national and Islamic identity of the Tatars as a source where a Tatar finds life values that form the basis of his/her self-consciousness, the spiritual content of his/her being. Emphasizing national feelings, religious values the Tatars advocate the integrity of their consciousness and behavior. At the same time, the centuries-old experience of multinational and multi-religious coexistence in the Republic of Tatarstan has formed the traditions of intercultural communication based on mutual respect and friendship with each other.
