Etymological and Psycho-Economic Manifestations of Chinese Patriotism in the Baikal Region

Abstract

Chinese guides tell their tourists that Lake Baikal was part of China during the Tang and Qing dynasties. The article presents possible origins of the name of lake Baikal in different Siberian and Asian peoples’ historical memory: Huns, Kurykans, Sakha (Yakuts), Mongols, Buryats and Evenks. The ancient Yakut interpretation of the name of Lake Baikal seems to be the most compelling. Today, this etymology is an argument providing grounds for the economic claims of the use of water and tourism resources of the "Siberian sea" for some people, and arguments of such kind are growing in number. In relation to these issues lack of patriotism on the part of the Baikal residents is most likely to lead to strengthening proprietary interests among the Chinese people.
