Relevance and Prospects of the Research of Labor Migrants in Novosibirsk

Author(s)

Abstract

Today big cities have become the center of attraction for labor migrants. The territorial and labor localization of labor migrants is becoming an increasingly important factor of ethnic and social security. The analysis of the available studies in the field of labor migration, as well as social and cultural adaptation of migrants in Novosibirsk, demonstrates the absence of systematic and fundamental researches on the interrelation of territorial settlement and labor localization of migrants taking into account their economic, social, ethno-cultural, religious, and other factors. On the basis of the original research program the authors brought forward the following issues: socially important characteristics of labor and territorial localization of migrants in the city of Novosibirsk in geographic, sectoral, network and other contexts; influence of territorial and labour localizations upon the nature of interethnic and inter-confessional relations in the city – determination of ethnic and social distance between migrants and the host community; the limits of ethnic and social security in Novosibirsk, taking into account the migratory pressure on certain urban areas and segments of the labor market in the urban economy-identification of potential and most relevant risks and threats in the field of public and personal safety of the residents; recommendations and proposals on the results of the study to be offered to national and local authorities, as well as civil society institutions involved in the management of migration and national (inter-ethnic) relations.
