The Cult of Maria Lionsa: on the Peculiarities of the Catholic Tradition in Venezuela

Abstract
This article is the first in the domestic Religious Studies to consider Venezuelan syncretic cult of Maria Lionza. The author reveals different versions of the origin of the cultandits causes. Special attentionis given to the Catholic role of the image of the goddess Maria Lionzathat absorbed the popular conception of the Virgin Mary.
