Aesthetical Traditions and Innovations in the Modern Christian Church Architecture in Western Europe

Author(s)
V. V. Barashkov
Abstract
The paper gives a stylistic analysis of three modern churches: the chapel Notre Dame du Haut (1950–1955) by Le Corbusier, Evry Cathedral of the Resurrection (1991–1995) by Mario Botta and the church “Reading Between the Lines” in Looz by the duo Gijs Van Vaerenbergh. According to the author, main aesthetical innovations of spiritual architecture are particularly the simplification of forms of both the exterior and the interior, and building churches into multifunctional Christian public complexes. The primary means of transmitting the sacredness of the building is involvement of natural light. Preservation of confessional peculiarities of contemporary religious architecture is achieved by the reproduction of regional traditions.
