Forensic Linguistics as a Master’s Program: in Search of an Optimal Balance between Basic and Applied Research

Abstract

The freedom of legislation of subordinate entities of the Russian Federation, the growth of citizens’ and private legal persons’ individual social and business activity, freedom of speech in the mass media, the growing performance of extremism and other contemporary social processes have formed a situation in which the speech behavior, pattern of communication interaction and text may be a source of conflict. Highly qualified specialists capable of solving the most broad range of issues emerging in the sphere of interaction of language and law are needed for the production of linguistics expert witness of speech activity products. The training of such specialists is the purpose of the Master’s program “Forensic linguistics”. The paper proposes a short description of the objects of linguistics expert witness case studies of expert witnesses based on the analysis of creolized texts and prosodic level of speech are being analyzed, the main requirements for linguistics experts are stated that determine the structure and the content of the curriculum.
