Social Activities of the Orthodox Church as a Tool for the Development of Civil Society in Modern Russia

Abstract
Social activities of the Orthodox Church as a system of theory, practice and values are by nature social activities, being at the same time a way of citizens’ self-organizing activity. It is a tool to create a civil society, because conscious active participation of the population in the process of solving social problems develops responsibility, social and civic engagement. Social activities of the Church are predetermined by cultural and historical traditions, which contributes to the continuity of generations enhancing the role of charity and humanism.
