Russian School of Electoral Studies: Methodological Approaches

Author(s)
S. S. Rozhneva
Abstract
This article focuses on the importance of studying electoral practices, voting behavior and preferences, and value aspects of voters' political culture manifested in elections. Attention is drawn to the process of institutionalization of Russia's social science in the field of studying electoral processes, which specifies the goal of the paper – to determine the stages of Russian school of electoral studies formation, to analyze their theoretical and methodological specifics. The article presents the author's approach to four-stage periodization: 1905-1917 – the pre-revolutionary period of journalistic research with a predominance of statistical methods of data processing; 1960s – 1980s – the Soviet period of research with criticism of Western electoral concepts of political participation and behavior based on scientific communism and Marxist-Leninist ideological orientation; 1989-1990s. – the beginning of the formation of Russian electoral studies methodology, professionalization and institutionalization of scientific knowledge; 2000s – present – independence of the Russian school of multi-paradigm, cross-disciplinary electoral research, which is explained by the specific nature of electoral studies performed by Russian scientists. In conclusion, the author highlights the fact that at the present stage there is an increasing complexity of the Russian electoral studies methodology – from qualitative, descriptive methods to quantitative mathematical processing of a large pool of data. This fact helps to identify indicators for calculating the structure of voting behavior and preferences, to determine parameters for comparison, to model regional and local voting practices, etc.
