The Moral City: The Return of the Political

Author(s)
T. Kh. Kerimov, D. A. Tomiltseva
Abstract
The concept of the post-political in social sciences is used as a critical tool to describe the form of neutralization of the distinction between politics and the political and the processes of depoliticization associated with it. Depoliticization processes displace the political from public space and integrate it into techno-managerial structures and mechanisms. The article explores the dynamics of depoliticization, the contours and characteristics of the supposed “retreat of the political,” and the modalities and possibilities for the emerging “return of the political”. The main idea of the article is that the idea of the “moral city” reveals a number of new ways of re-centring the political and the conditions for preventing the risks of post-politicization under the sign of mutual respect, equality and solidarity. Thus, the new forms of coexistence are opening up. This idea is argued in three parts of the article. The first part examines the concept of the post-political city as a space of technomanagerial dispositifs, devoid of specific political demands. The second part reveals conceptual approaches to the description of the moral city, and the third part provides examples of recommendations for organizing interactions between significant actors in the moral city.
