Toward the Question of Defining the Concept of “Party System”

Author(s)
S. A. Shpagin
Abstract
The article carries out a theoretical analysis of the categories “party system” and “relevant parties” in order to clarify the boundaries of these concepts. The contradictory traditional approach to the interpretation of these categories and the limited possibility of its application for the study of new and one-party political systems are shown. The application of a wide version of the definition of the party system, which includes the interaction of parties with citizens and institutions of power, as well as the prospect of recognizing all electoral parties as relevant, is justified.
