Multiculturalism in European Cinema: Natural Process or Political Assignment?

Author(s)
O. G. Krivileva
Abstract

The author points out a rapidly developed tendency in European cinema – display of cultural diversity and emphasis on cross-cultural relations. The trend becomes visible off screen, in the production process, as well as on screen, in the content of the films. The author argues that such a sharp rise of the multicultural context in cinema is not a natural process at all, either is evoked by commercial reasons, but rather by political and ideological ones. The article proves that it makes part of the general cultural policy and the widely promoted philosophy of the European Union.
