The Development of the Jesuits’ Missionary Work in New France

Abstract

This paper is concerned with the Society of Jesus’ missionary activity in New France. The author aims at analyzing Jesuit Missions’ work among North American Indians in the XVII century and early XVIII century. The basic stages and characteristic features of the Missions establishment and are presented. Much attention is paid to the development and functioning of the Mission of Canada. Missionaries’ achievements and failures are indicated in order to assess the Jesuits’ missionary work. The author comes to a conclusion that the Jesuits’ missionary work in New France is progressive in nature.
